Get What You Want from Your Business

Updated: Feb 25

Rediscover your passion, reclaim your freedom, and lead with purpose.

Most small business owners started their business for one of two reasons:

  1. They had a passion for the product or service and felt called to do something; or

  2. They wanted the freedom to be their own boss.

The trouble is that once they’ve grown a team and started to see success, they notice that they’re not doing much of either of those things. Many find that they spend most of their time dealing with urgent issues or administrative tasks, not doing the thing that they love. They feel like a slave to their business, not the boss.

Three Steps to Reclaim Your Business

Implement these three steps and you’ll start to see your dreams come within reach.

Step 1: Get to know yourself.

To operate at our best, we have to understand ourselves first. This is the premise of Emotional Intelligence and a key skill for all leaders. Understanding what type of work brings you joy, which type brings you frustration, your strengths, your weaknesses, and your emotional wounds and internal stories helps you respond to situations rather than react. It also clarifies which tasks you should keep and which you should delegate.

Step 2: Know where you’re going.

Knowing where you’re going with your business is important but so is knowing where you’re going with your personal life. You don’t need to have every detail plotted because life does like to throw curveballs at us, but know and communicate your personal values, your lifelong dreams and plans, and what is the priority right now. Doing this helps your team and your customers understand and trust you more.

Step 3: Get to know your team.

Just as understanding yourself helps you respond well in situations, understanding your team will help you to develop them and get the best results from them. You need to understand what motivates them, what brings them joy, and where their strengths and weaknesses are so that you can help them be successful. When your team is successful, your business is successful.

How To Get Started?

You can begin working through these steps by taking assessments, training courses, coaching, or self-study and reflection. Some of the actions are quick, but most will take some time to learn and develop and may require the help of an outside resource for awareness and accountability. The important thing to understand is that it is a process and the best time to start is now.
