Make the Most of Your Milestones

How Pausing to Reflect on Your Progress can Realign Your Purpose and Fuel Your Next Step.

Celebration, cheers, toast
May was a busy month! Kristina Schmitt Development turned two, my podcast published its 50th episode, and we elected a new Pope! While some of these milestones may feel more significant to certain people than others, they all prompted me to reflect on the difference between how we begin and how we behave once we’re in it.

Starting something new is a mix of excitement, anxiety, and uncertainty. We make our plans and dive in. As we push toward the goal, we often keep our heads down and just keep doing. There’s no time to pause—certainly not to reflect. We simply keep going.

Recording my 50th podcast episode gave me a reason to pause. I re-listened to my very first episode, where I shared my hopes for what the podcast could offer. I realized that while I had achieved many of those goals, there were others I never even made a plan to pursue. That made me ask:

listening to podcast
Was it really important to me? What got in the way? What do I want to do now?

Whether your goal is something big—like starting a business or launching a podcast—or something more personal, like committing to a new workout routine, it's important to pause and reflect on your progress.

Milestones offer the perfect opportunity. Here’s how:

Celebrate your successes

Look at where you started and how far you’ve come. Maybe your goal was to work out five days a week, and you're averaging one or two. That’s still a win—it's one or two days more than before.

Identify roadblocks

What’s keeping you from doing more? Are your thoughts about the goal accurate? If not, reframe them.

Check in with yourself

Is this goal still important? What were you hoping to achieve by working out five times a week? Have you already gained some of those benefits with one or two sessions, or is there still a gap?

Adjust and recommit

If needed, revise your goal. Then, write it down and recommit.

Set your next review

Choose a time or milestone for your next check-in. The key is to make reflection a habit.

reflection, taking notes

Goals help us move toward the life we want.

Regularly reviewing them keeps us aligned, focused, and moving forward.
